ABSTRACT
Qualitative approaches to research for the social sciences can be used to generate findings for representation in composite narratives. Such approaches seek to advance understanding and knowledge about how humans experience their world, building on theoretical frameworks such as symbolic interactionism and phenomenology. Methods for collecting and analysing data according to phenomenological inquiry or grounded theory can be used to conduct qualitative research in the social sciences. This chapter will present an overview of phenomenology and grounded theory, because these two systems of research methods are complementary to composite narrative methods.
