ABSTRACT

The QuantCrit tent of using voice and insight is about people speaking for numbers and, with that, infusing their past assumptions and biases. The onus is on people to shift the narrative and power to communities of Color so that they can interpret the numbers by contextualizing them and telling counter-stories using data. Recommendations in this chapter also include how to incorporate community input formally and informally through the entire research process, and throwing “data parties” to allow for “groundtruthing” and participatory data analysis. These practices create ownership that has led to scaling research and policy change that may not have otherwise occurred had community stakeholders not been involved. Data users and researchers must still be mindful of the time burden this places on communities and balance this ask by compensation and through coauthorship.
