ABSTRACT

The word “virtue” refers to a certain aspect of moral life and has played an important role in philosophy almost since the very beginning of ethical reflection. The term has undergone many semantic transformations corresponding to trends in thinking about morality. Its meaning has been constantly adapted to the needs of the time and to cultural and historical contexts, taking into account how ethics responds to the moral challenges facing man. Today, the environmental crisis appears to be a tremendous challenge for human beings. From the ethical perspective, the moral dimension of human–environmental relations is crucial. The moral aspect of the environmental crisis has been recognized since the 1960s and has been analyzed from the perspectives of various ethical traditions and of virtue, which led to the beginning of environmental virtue ethics (EVE).
