ABSTRACT

Virtue ethics is one of the oldest approaches to morality. However, the moral competences discussion has evolved significantly since ancient times, and the contemporary perception of aretological issues has been strongly influenced by the modern revival of virtue ethics. The so-called renaissance of virtue ethics, attributed to Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe and her article Modern Moral Philosophy, has led ethicians to apply ancient wisdom to modern moral challenges. Chapter 1 presents contemporary virtue ethics and the main approaches to the virtue discussion: a) eudaimonistic virtue ethics; b) virtue ethics focused on the moral subject and exemplary moral character; c) teleological virtue ethics; and d) Platonic virtue ethics.
