ABSTRACT

The words “virtue” and “vice” are some of the oldest terms used in ethics since ancient times. However, as philosophical trends have evolved, so too has the meaning of these two words. Section 3.1 presents the etymology and history of the words “virtue” and “vice” and how the understanding of these terms has changed since antiquity. Section 3.2 describes the postulate of a return to virtue language by Louke van Wensveen and the understanding of the role of virtue language in discussion on the environmental crisis. According to van Wensveen, this critical situation calls for the use of virtue language as this would enable people to address the environmental crisis in a proactive way.
