ABSTRACT
Environmental virtue ethics has developed three important concepts. The first is Henry David Thoreau’s concept (1954, Chapter 4), which precedes environmental ethics chronologically since it was developed in the 19th century. Thoreau has been a great role model for generations of environmentalists, thus his approach to EVE is referred to as the “classic” one. It should be emphasized that the discussion in Chapter 4 is strongly influenced by Cafaro’s insightful interpretation of Thoreau’s writing, which does not have a philosophical style, therefore some philosophical interpretation is necessary. Chapter 4 describes the ethical concept of the aforementioned authors (Section 4.1) and the understanding of virtues in Thoreau’s concept of EVE (Section 4.2).
