ABSTRACT

Inequality has always persisted in our society in different forms. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a changing phase for the whole of humanity. The pandemic has highlighted many inequalities that persist in our society. Inequality of opportunity came into the limelight during the pandemic. The pandemic impacted every social institution, and education is one of them. Even before the pandemic in our country, primary school education was not accessible to everyone, and further pandemic highlighted the gap in our education system. Schools were shut because of the pandemic, and the education system was shifted from physical to virtual education. Many students could not attend school because of a lack of resources, such as no electronic devices or proper internet connection. This scenario highlighted the digital divide in our country. This research, keeping in mind the present social situation created because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will try to sociologically understand the concept of the ‘digital divide’ and ‘inequality of opportunity’. The research will analyse secondary resources such as newspaper reports, research on the digital divide, technology use, and government policies to reduce the digital divide in our country.
