ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 establishes a framework for a cultural history of waste disposal and the redevelopment of waste sites, specifically landfills, into parks. Cultural history provides insight into the deeper meaning(s) and context(s). Lenses used include the study of art, art history, landscape architecture, and the use of critical theory (i.e., analyses of the “why”) as elements of cultural history. This chapter provides the intellectual foundation for the more-descriptive historical chapters that follow.
