ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of the different modalities of racialization and racism. The discussion revolves around how these dynamics differ based on whether the targeted group possesses visible and distinguishable phenotypical differences in the eyes of the majority or not. Takezawa then examines the mutable dividing lines between visible and invisible racial differences by unveiling the deceptive nature inherent to both aspects. This chapter sets the stage for the volume, discussing how the perception of race is not an automatic response to visual stimuli but can be influenced by non-visual factors. It is within this nebulous realm, between visibilities and invisibilities, that the racialization process discerns and cultivates markers of difference.
