ABSTRACT
The chapter is dedicated to selected topics of commodity science in the field of bioeconomy. The first part introduced the subject and scope of commodity science, including the bioeconomy. The next part focussed on the topic of biomass, its classification and value, with special attention to the basic components of biomass, which are the basic raw materials for the bioeconomy. Proteins, sugars, fats, minerals and other components are discussed. The final part considers the processes of the standardisation, certification and labelling of bioeconomy products. There are still some gaps in this area, especially with regard to bio-based materials other than food.
