ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a critical review of existing research on English-medium instruction (EMI), with a focus on STEM disciplines. The chapter evaluates the global and local trends of EMI policies, exploring the driving forces behind their implementation. It highlights the impact of EMI on STEM education, analyzing how these policies shape teaching practices and the learning experience of students. The chapter also identifies gaps in the literature, particularly in Hong Kong. It discusses the challenges and opportunities that stakeholders encounter in implementing EMI. Finally, the chapter argues for the necessity to address the gaps and improve the effectiveness of EMI policies in STEM education.
