ABSTRACT

Technology development is a culturally and socially situated effort. As such, it is influenced by social and cultural norms that shape perspectives and afford different experiences to individuals based on their alignment with such norms. This chapter characterizes the field of technology development as strongly influenced by gender bias and explores the implications for investigating and regulating industrial and technological endeavors to automatize translation and interpreting. It is argued that, despite efforts to present technology as neutral, when a field dominated by heteronormative male values meets feminized professions, the social, economic, and political implications must be attentively explored and carefully considered in legal and policy frameworks.
