ABSTRACT

Following on from the criticism of frontier-related conceptions of the rural in the previous chapter, this chapter juxtaposes this with alternative conceptions of rurality in present-day Fennoscandia. This chapter discusses, among other things, the role of majority culture as well as rural lifestyle and habitation structures that enable conceptions in relation to nature. The chapter draws largely on literature analysing Fennoscandian cases, which, through this, positions itself in opposition to Anglo literature. Mirroring this literature, the chapter thus proceeds to illustrate and challenge the conceptualisations discussed in the previous chapter as typical of an understanding of the rural.
