ABSTRACT

This chapter examines data from five sources: GuideStar nonprofit database, Chronicle of Philanthropy article database, Rockefeller Foundation grants database, Open Philanthropy grants database, and Google AI for Good competition winners. A total of 349 unique philanthropic organizations are identified. The organizations are then categorized into three groups based on their technology integration styles. The first set of organizations are tech-centered in their mission, meaning their mission is to directly support AI, ML, or DST activities. The second set are tech-perpetuating, meaning their mission is to promote broader access to and support for communities engaged in AI, ML, or DST. The third set are tech-implementing, meaning that AI, ML, or DST is being used in applications to increase impact or capacity to mitigate social problems. Case studies of 15 philanthropic organizations are described, providing examples of each of the three sets of activities. The chapter concludes with a conceptual framework for the role of philanthropy in advancing technology and improving society.
