ABSTRACT
The chapter provides an analysis of cascades of violence and uncertainty of a quarter of a century in Haṅgāmī Āvās. By focusing on the long-term impacts of the temporary shelter neighbourhood that have resulted as permanent urban temporariness, the cascades of COVID-19, and political landscape during the run up for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, and the third term of BJP's rule under Modi, the chapter argues that the two decades after the 2001 earthquake has meant normalisation of cascades of violence and uncertainty: permanent urban temporality and dispossession for the urban poor along caste and religious lines, deepening of socio-economical inequalities during the COVID-19 pandemic for the same communities, and finally, becoming direct target of polarised hate speech during the Lok Sabha 2024 elections. The results of Lok Sabha may not directly change the futures that Haṅgāmī Āvās residents may face; however, it is likely that the future years may bring openings for alternative scenarios for the urban permanent temporariness and dispossession.
