ABSTRACT
This chapter examines disorders of the endocrine system that may affect skeletal development. The hypersecretion or hyposecretion of hormones by the glands of the endocrine system can affect bone size, shape, and density. This chapter specifically focuses on disorders associated with the pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as the gonads. For each disorder, the factors that could have affected the normal function of the glands are outlined, and the potential manifestation of each condition on the human skeleton is presented. References and suggested readings at the end of the chapter include additional important works from the clinical and palaeopathological literature.
