ABSTRACT
An unexpected stroke left Dr Graham Lawrence with functional impairment and his personal life in ruins. Returning to work as a rheumatologist in the major teaching hospital where he was treated for his stroke brought unanticipated problems with his colleagues. But it also led to an increase in his empathy and connection with patients. This story discusses workplace behavior and the breaches of medical confidentiality and privacy that can occur when a doctor is the patient.
