ABSTRACT
Dr Isabella Austin is a Mexican American gastroenterologist and a transplant hepatology fellow in a large teaching hospital. She was working as a surgeon in Mexico but wanted more specialist training so she moved to the United States. She had to study for the medical board exams while supporting herself by working part-time on a hepatology research project. Clearly, medicine is calling for Dr Austin! As with so many other physicians, work-life integration became very difficult when COVID-19 reached her city. She had to leave her very young children and isolate herself when doing a month of service as a resident. Luckily, she had great family support from her husband and mother. She is talking here in late 2020, less than a year into the pandemic.
