ABSTRACT

Dr Sutton was a board-certified internal medicine physician in charge of a large team of junior doctors in a Philadelphia hospital when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the major cities of the United States. He worked nonstop through those terrifying, chaotic days, making life and death decisions based on sketchy information and little sleep. In Fall, 2020, he and his wife moved across the country, and he began retraining as a hematologist. However, he was unprepared for the burnout and subsequent depression he felt. He reflects on emotions in the aftermath of working on the front lines, and later feeling unprepared for giving bad news to cancer patients. He found the courage to ask for help and is grateful for the support from his program.
