ABSTRACT

Dr Angela Heredia is a mid-career pain specialist in private practice who is telling her story before the opioid crisis became fully apparent. She’s been experiencing intense pressure from both her patients and practice owners to prescribe opioids against her better clinical judgment. She often encounters aggression from her patients and is weary with the continual battles she fights. She is conscious of experiencing moral injury and burnout with unsupportive leadership and aggressive, demanding patients. She wonders if she should change careers to stay true to her values as a physician and desire to help patients.
