ABSTRACT

Dr Heather Lacey is nine years into her medical career, training to be a cardiologist. She is capable and confident but still encounters bullying by senior colleagues. When she was more junior, she felt humiliated and devastated when they shouted at her in public, but now she knows how to cope. She strongly believes that the high pressure, hierarchical structure of the learning environment, alongside tiredness, frustration, ego and pride are to blame for the bad behavior often directed at trainees in the medical system. She hopes that her story will be helpful to others, who may be suffering in silence.
