ABSTRACT

Dr Alan McKinney is a physician at the top of his profession, yet he clearly remembers back to the days when he was a young resident and life was made unnecessarily stressful by a brilliant but highly competitive fellow trainee who always wanted to show off and impress people in authority. Tragically, this man later died by suicide. Dr McKinney reflects on the inherent pressures in medicine that can lead to such dreadful outcomes. He also reflects on the importance of emotional support and prioritizing values, meaning, and purpose in work as the source of one’s happiness.
