ABSTRACT
This chapter reports on the development of a new framework, the civic measurement maps, which illustrates the depth and breadth of the field of civic measurement. Research to develop the framework involved interviewing 70+ academic and applied researchers studying and developing measures of individual civic readiness and civic opportunities. Our goal with this project was to perform a comprehensive—but not exhaustive—landscape review of existing resources (research projects, assessments, frameworks) to identify what tools exist to help answer the question: how do we know our efforts to improve our constitutional democracy are working? Key findings and recommendations are provided to help inform the future of civic learning and civic opportunity assessment, to fill gaps in the current literature, and to generate actionable knowledge to support development of civic readiness for students regardless of their background. Our initial results, and subsequent work rooted in this project, are captured in this chapter.
