ABSTRACT
Drawing on research from museum, tourism, and business literatures, this chapter discusses how design elements of museum spaces and exhibitions can contribute to visitor engagement and ultimately sustainability outcomes. The chapter uses a case-based approach where design elements of the Geolab at the Norwegian Mining Museums are analyzed, considering their potential to foster engagement among young children visiting the lab. Interviews with parents revealed connections between design elements and children’s motivation, opportunity, and ability to embrace museum experiences with engagement. In turn, such engagement was related to sustainability outcomes along the three dimensions of the triple bottom line. Managerial implications and directions for future research are discussed.
