ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the kites—their location, setting, architecture, chronology and associated cultural landscape—in Jordan, Syria, Arabia, the Negev and Sinai deserts, Armenia, and the Ustyurt Plateau. However, the most detailed description is devoted to the Harrat al-Sham chains of kites in Jordan; the knowledge, efforts, and magnitude they reflect are unique on a global scale. Moreover, the cultural landscape in this particular region is unparalleled, possessing a wide variety of structures, including some enigmatic types.
