ABSTRACT
In this chapter, Mieke Bal discusses “Citational Aesthetics: For Intermediality as Interrelation”, in which she uses Elleström’s intermedial framework as a stepping stone towards discussing citational aesthetics in contemporary art. Bal treats the idea of intermediality as a meeting of materialities, discourses, and past and present. Through five mini case studies, Bal shows us how contemporary art can engage with socio-political topics and bring in different worldviews, ideologies, and experiences by references to previously existing media products, traditions, or even names.
