ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the main characteristics and changes that occurred in Portuguese literature since the beginning of the 21th century until 2022. Some of them relate to previous trends, which will be identified in their main features, while others are clear innovations that introduce in Portuguese literature a number of characteristics that seem to be gaining momentum in the present, and conceivably for the future. Among the former, post-imperialism and post-colonialism should be mentioned, linked to the questioning of Portuguese contemporary identity. The latter enable us to understand how comparatism, cosmopolitanism and a wider attention to non-Portuguese topics in fiction and to non-present events take a central place within Portuguese literature.
