ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes terms coined jointly by Matteo Ricci and fellow missionary Michele Ruggieri (1543–1607) for their Púhàn cídiǎn 葡漢辭典 [Portuguese-Chinese dictionary] as well as related terms. The Púhàn cídiǎn was the first bilingual dictionary ever produced for a European language (Portuguese) and Chinese. Although it does not contain a great many terms, the dictionary is valuable for studying the Míng Chinese lexicon. This chapter analyzes some of the academic terms included in the dictionary as a complement to the terminology in the above chapters.
