ABSTRACT

Indian international students face several challenges during their education journey in Canada. The financial, academic, and acculturative stressors can all contribute to significant mental health burdens for these students. This chapter will explore the mental health of these students including a focus on causative factors both before departure from their home countries and following arrival in Canada. There will also be an exploration of substance abuse, suicide, and the distinct barriers which these students deal with in accessing mental health care, as research has shown that international students utilise mental health care services at much lower rates compared to domestic students. Finally, the chapter will also expound on future directions for providing improved care and accessibility to mental health services for Indian international students.
