ABSTRACT
In this essay, the painting installation 8.25 Minutes by the artist Jered Sprecher examines mediated experiences of nature and the contingent interior space. Sublime wonder and dread are often associated with experiences of the natural environment. This wonder and dread can also be located in human environmental impact and the magnitude of ever-expanding development. The installation, 8.25 Minutes, provides a foil to this phenomenon, creating a painting in the round and referring to natural beauty while echoing wonder, and alluding to the precarity of life. The need for reverence for the environment and fellow humans is underscored throughout the essay, revealing the potential of public interiority and the delicate tapestry of community.
