ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how to use in-person communication to build trust, foster engagement, and deepen human connection. It equips communicators with practical tools to prepare for and deliver clear, compelling messages—in formal talks, casual conversations, or spontaneous public encounters. Grounded in empathy and strategy, this chapter emphasizes the importance of active listening, audience awareness, and presence. It introduces frameworks like the JAM tool and draws on improvisational techniques to help scientists speak authentically and adapt in real time. By highlighting the emotional, relational, and cognitive strengths of in-person interactions, this chapter encourages scientists to approach every in-person moment as a valuable opportunity to connect, inspire, and build trust in science.
