ABSTRACT
The chapter guides scientists on how to strategically contribute to the policymaking process. It provides pathways for communicating with elected officials and government staff and understanding the different roles that scientists can play in providing advice to policymakers. It highlights potential distinctions and similarities between trying to provide policymakers with options and arguing for specific paths forward. The chapter also discusses how to develop written briefing materials as well as navigate face-to-face interaction. It shows how science communicators can seek to understand policymakers’ needs and the contexts within which policy options get considered. It also highlights the value of collaboration among scientists with similar goals in seeking to ensure that policymakers consider scientists’ advice, particularly by aligning the advice provided with policymakers’ needs and expectations.
