ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the important role that well-managed events can play in science communication strategy. It highlights the range of options available to science communicators whose goals and objectives suggest the need for face-to-face interactions. In particular, it emphasizes the value of events for scientists whose goals involve listening to the perspectives of others to make better research choices. The chapter outlines the types of questions that scientists organizing events should ask themselves to ensure those events are effective and provides a number of best practices, including the use of checklists to keep track of logistical tasks and the preparation of contingency plans.
