ABSTRACT

Atmospheres are the focus in this intermezzo. There is a brief explanation of the composition of Earth's atmosphere and the impact of climate change on atmosphere. Next it discusses the global international Government bodies that are responsible for monitoring the weather, such as the Meteorological Office (Met Office) in the UK, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the USA. Next, it considers what the future of Space might look like if it were seen as aer nullis—perhaps there will be future claims for ownership of space outside of Earth's Atmosphere. The intermezzo ends with a more sociological perspective on atmospheres as affective, which mark, shape, deform, and define relational bodies. It provides an example of the ways affective atmospheres can impact our day-to-day experiences of place-spaces, by drawing on an experience of an old hospital building and site that was used to treat service personnel in the two World Wars, and the contemporary impact of the site being sold for housing development.
