ABSTRACT

Wireless communication is perhaps the key technological enabler of a smart city. Unfortunately, as also experienced in the Stavanger area, current wireless technologies struggle to deliver infrastructure with the performance and flexibility needed to enable advanced smart city services.

The fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks is a reality, but its full potential is far from accomplished. 5G together with edge computing, which consists of deploying computing platforms close to the users, will overcome some of current limitations; for example, an increment of the complexity to manage and orchestrate such integrated infrastructure, concerns about the security and dependability, and possible negative impact on the sustainability since the energy impact is unknown.

In this scenario, the 5G-MODaNeI project at the University of Stavanger (UiS) investigates and proposes solutions to manage the complexity of 5G and edge computing. Models are proposed to evaluate the security and dependability of 5G and edge computing systems. Artificial intelligence is used to orchestrate the data and network resources. The developed solutions are evaluated in actual testbeds.

In future smart cities, the use of the communication technology will need to evolve. The relevant stakeholders need to collaborate to ensure that the full potential of 5G is exploited and the drawbacks are avoided.
