ABSTRACT

Beyond that which can be learned on the basis of a single study, researchers are always interested in how knowledge can be advanced by systematically examining bodies of studies within their field. In this chapter, we consider the extension of findings from one or more qualitative studies through secondary analysis, as well as the synthesis of what can be learned from critically reflecting on collections of studies with a common focus. The interpretive description approach to knowledge building provides clear guidance to reach beyond simply describing what exists, not simply reporting but rather capitalizing on the opportunity for such reviews to help us dig more deeply into an understanding of why that might matter.
