ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we consider the role and purpose of a research question in applied qualitative studies, specifically aligning them with the disciplinary worldviews that lead practice scholars into their inquiries. Because the research question is a central navigational instrument that provides guidance throughout the full course of an interpretive description study, it is important to engage in thoughtful critical reflection on both the phenomenal focus for your work and the philosophical orientations that may be implied in the manner in which it is articulated. In coming to understand the nature and meaning of your research question, you set the stage for a study in which the design elements can be logically articulated and contextually authentic.
