ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses different types of “waste” arisings, including pre- and post-consumer “waste” before defining what the author means by Household Waste. A brief summary of the UK’s main “waste” categories is presented, followed by a detailed breakdown of the composition of Household Waste by material type and discusses how such composition analyses are prepared.

The author asserts that one third of all Household Waste is made up of packaging, slightly less than one third is products and the remainder is organic material. The packaging, together with the organic material, both of which are suitable for kerbside collection, constitute 70% of Household Waste.
