ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the fact that different WCAs require householders to set out their unwanted materials for kerbside collection in many different ways; there is no consistent approach, leading to householder confusion.

It goes on to explain the current methods of collecting Dry Recyclables, organic material (food and garden “waste”) and residue for EfW incineration or landfill, including photographs and descriptions of collection containers and collection vehicles. It also introduces the concept of co-mingled Dry Recyclables collection.

There is a discussion of the contribution made by drop-off collection and the role of Household Waste Recycling Centres.

The chapter concludes with a flow diagram which illustrates how the Three Rs can be implemented in practice through product collection and the kerbside collection by WCAs of: Dry Recyclables, garden “waste”, food “waste” and residue for EfW incineration or disposal.
