ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief presentation of the genesis of evidence-based medicine. This is relevant because evidence-based practice in psychology is explicitly based on evidence-based medicine. It is also relevant because it allows for some comparison between the two policy statements. Evidence-based medicine emerged in the wake of Archie Cochrane’s critique of the medical practice of his day. He argued that randomised controlled trials could provide unbiased information regarding treatment efficacy. The revisions of evidence-based medicine are presented in addition to some of its basic components like the evidence hierarchy and the GRADE system.
