ABSTRACT

Many philosophers have recently turned their attention to the notion of grounding as a way to state claims about metaphysical structure or determination. However, little to no effort has been made by proponents of grounding to clarify whether a grounding-based approach to metaphysics is compatible with the basic tenets of inductive or scientific metaphysics more generally. This chapter takes initial steps toward filling this gap. Starting from a proposal made by Fine, it sketches an epistemology of grounding that incorporates scientific and empirical evidence. It is suggested that, on the proposal presented here, grounding will emerge as scientifically responsible.
