ABSTRACT

In generalized evolution theory (GET), the three core principles of the theory of evolution − reproduction, variation, and selection − are abstracted from their biological basis and extended to other domains, in particular to the domain of cultural evolution. In the first part of this chapter, the metaphysical foundations of GET are laid down. Thereby, GET is established as a paradigm theory of Inductive Metaphysics. In the second part, a propensity account of fitness is developed that explicates fitness as a reproduction propensity of repeatable evolutionary constellations, thereby establishing a systematic connection between fitness and limiting reproduction frequencies. By showing how to apply this fitness concept to prima facie problematic cases we defend this approach against objections in the current literature.
