ABSTRACT

Evelina developed a panic disorder when she got her first permanent job. Anne developed anxiety when she lost her job. Through hundreds of years of the fragmentation and standardisation of work, people have grown used to living scheduled lives in accordance with the principles of disenchantment. We know that “stress” has a negative impact on well-being, but what is hiding in that word – “stress”? What confuses matters is that, on the one hand, there is increasing uncertainty regarding one's future finances, and, on the other, an increasing weaning off living with uncertainty the more standardised work becomes. This is why many now flee family life for the secure environment of work. We cannot handle the “chaos” of human relations. And while we may become better at working, we become worse at living.
