ABSTRACT

The Introduction (Figure 3.1) explained that spatial polarization is progressing in the 23 wards of Tokyo. Urban polarization causes various changes to the city, and one of the most important of these is gentrification. Most cities contain areas close to the city center that contain small, dilapidated houses. These areas are places where self-employed workers, laborers, and poorer people have traditionally lived. They started on the periphery of the city, but as the city has grown, they have been subsumed. They are known as succession areas in urban sociology.
