ABSTRACT
The entry explores the critical role of institutions in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting their influence on policymaking and path dependencies. Institutions, defined as human-constructed constraints or opportunities, shape the choices and behaviours of individuals within societies. The Institutional Analysis and Development framework emphasizes the importance of informal practices, or rules-in-use, over formal regulations, that can be applied to achieve sustainable progress towards the SDGs. The concept of polycentric governance is discussed, underscoring the need for a multi-sectoral approach across various levels of governance – from international to local – and the involvement of both governmental and non-governmental actors. By understanding institutional effects, policymakers can better navigate the opportunities and barriers that influence SDG implementation, ultimately leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes.
