ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the international migration scenario of all the eight South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) by country, origin and destination through the analysis of available data. The data covers time-period from 1990 to 2020, at every five-year interval (1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020), data publicly available from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (UN DESA PD) (for formatting requirements, some data series has not been exhibited in this paper). A discussion on the incidence of international migration from and towards South Asia is covered in this chapter, this includes international migration within South Asia also. Even though international migration from South Asia has increased during the last 30 years, data reveals, this increase has been found to be slower as compared to that for other geographical regions of the world. The penultimate section summarizes, and the final section concludes with some policy recommendation.
