ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the concept of necropolitics in Armin Greder’s picturebooks, focusing on The Island, The Mediterranean, and The Inheritance. The analysis connects these works to Achille Mbembe’s notion of necropolitics, which explains how power determines who lives and who is left to die, often applied to the treatment of refugees and marginalised people. Greder’s narratives expose the violent exclusion of others and critique European xenophobia, the global refugee crisis, and economic inequalities. The chapter includes reader responses to examine how these books challenge young readers to confront uncomfortable truths about societal injustice and the human cost of indifference.
