ABSTRACT

In this chapter, social inclusion in sport is seen through the lens of empowerment. Whereas other models of social inclusion see social inclusion through concepts such as skills shortages, under-privilege and deficiency, seeing social inclusion as empowerment makes a shift to the perspective of possibility. Accordingly, this chapter critically examines the connection between empowerment and social inclusion and discusses whether grassroots sport is well equipped to stimulate empowerment. Thereafter, by employing theories of inclusive leadership and organizational theory, the role of sports leaders, in fostering empowerment through sport by creating meaningfulness, competence, impact and self-determination is explored both theoretically and empirically. Lastly, the chapter integrates the findings, highlights some practical perspectives, and concludes with a critical look at social inclusion and psychological empowerment.
