ABSTRACT

An institutional view of paradigm shifts considers the role of established structures, norms, and power dynamics in shaping the acceptance and diffusion of new ideas. Institutions play a crucial role in legitimizing and disseminating paradigm shifts within their respective domains. However, institutions can also serve as catalysts for paradigm shifts by providing platforms for debate, funding research, and promoting alternative perspectives. Embracing an institutional view of paradigm shifts highlights the interconnectedness between ideas, power, and social structures, shedding light on the mechanisms driving intellectual evolution within society. This chapter examines the role of institutions in shaping and perpetuating paradigm shifts within the field of management science. Readers will gain insights into how power dynamics and institutional norms influence the process of intellectual evolution.
