ABSTRACT
Cybercriminals are ready and willing to exploit many human psychological needs and weaknesses. The rise of cybercrime highlights the stark intersection between technological advancement and the nuanced presence of criminal conduct and online criminal exploitation. Cybercrime has been coined as the newest evolution in today's contemporary criminal ecosystem. This global integration of technology coupled with widespread dependency on the Internet will only intensify further as technology and cyberspace continue to develop, flourish, and evolve. With more individuals online than ever before, the opportunity for perpetrators and predators to commit crime online has inevitably soared in tow. Meanwhile, successful detection and prosecution of cybercriminal offenders continues to pose a range of barriers for law enforcement criminal justice agencies, who are struggling to keep pace. Understanding cybercrime through the application of theory and relevant literature can aid efforts to tackle cybercrime. This chapter builds on Chapter 1 which focussed on defining cybercrime and seeks to shed light on the human factors behind cybercrime, drawing on key theory and literature in a multi-disciplinary exploration.
